The Marshall Postal Museum was so well received during the 1992 home tour, that it became a regular museum feature on the home tour the next year. The museum is located in the basement of the United States Post Office, and can be accessed through the entrance on Madison Street.

The Post Office building, a Greek Revival architectural style with a copper roof, was constructed in 1932 out of Marshall sandstone. The interior may be viewed during regular post office hours.

The idea for the downstairs museum occurred during Marshall's 1987 historic home tour. At that time postmaster Mike Schragg displayed a number of old postal artifacts throughout the building, which was on tour that year. Many people thought that the entire post office was a museum rather than an official, working post office. After the tour Mike Schragg began organizing the collection of postal antiques in seven rooms in the basement, and in an annex building behind the Post Office.

One of the many features of the museum is a store front post office from the 1890's. Another large item is a horse-drawn mail buggy. The buggy, which is in excellent working condition, was built in 1905 and used for rural mail deliveries. Other postal artifacts include old uniforms, railroad mail sacks, assorted mail boxes, 1931 Model A Mail Truck, 1960's Three Wheel Mailster used in the big cities and many other items used by the Postal Service.

History was made on May 24, 2008 as the city's post office was officially named the Michael W. Schragg Post Office Building for the man who has had a lifelong passion for the postal service. The bill to do so was supported by the entire Michigan delegation before unanimously passing Congress the last year federal buildings could be named for living people. President George W. Bush signed it into law November 30, 2007.
